Tag Manager
5 Signs Your Tag Manager Container Needs an Audit
Tag Manager containers tend to grow quietly over time — a tag added for a campaign that ended two years ago, a variable nobody remembers the purpose of, a trigger copied and never cleaned up. Here's how to tell yours needs attention.
1. Nobody can explain what half the tags do
If you open the container and find tags with names like Tag - Copy - Copy (3) or generic labels that don't describe their purpose, that's a sign the container has been edited faster than it's been documented.
2. Page speed has quietly gotten worse
Every tag adds a small amount of load time. Ten forgotten tags from old campaigns can add up to a real, measurable slowdown — worth checking against a tool like PageSpeed Insights if you haven't run one in a while.
3. Your numbers don't match finance
If GA4 revenue and your actual order data have drifted apart, it's often because a purchase tag is firing more than once per transaction, or firing on a page that isn't actually the confirmation page anymore after a checkout redesign.
4. Multiple people have edit access with no version notes
GTM's version history is only useful if people actually write down why they made a change. If your version list is a wall of "Untitled Version," it's very hard to know what broke something when it breaks.
5. You've never used Preview mode to actually check
This is the simplest one to fix. Open GTM's Preview mode, browse your own site as a visitor would, and watch which tags actually fire on which pages. It's common to find tags firing on pages they were never meant to target.
An audit isn't about deleting everything and starting again — it's usually five or six specific fixes once you know where to look.
If any three of the five signs above sound familiar, it's worth blocking out half a day to go through the container properly rather than letting it keep drifting.
